setting: pre-war, shortly after prison penitentiary and immediately following a chance encounter in the ultra plant, after which andrea agrees to go for a drink.

it had been a while since lulu had been to mauville. on their way to the bar nearest from the rift, signs advertising mauville racing grounds featured the inspiring face of gym leader Josh Devlin . she thought of wings of ash, and the raikou that had been with him after all, in megalopolis. more and more power was bestowed by a world that consumed itself.[break][break]

was the ogerpon of the same origin, she wondered, or from somewhere else entirely?[break][break]

after a short time, they came to a stone building carved with veins of electricity, as though lightning had struck and left a scar. its sign read simply ’ohm’. [break][break]

”here we are,” lulu said, going to pull the heavy door open for her company. the interior was somewhat dim, a peaceful respite from the hot sun and bustling industrial city. the softest haze of incense smoke wafted through purple-tinted light.[break][break]

lulu slid into a seat. behind the bar, an elderly man, who looked as though he’d seen all of the worlds there were to see, smiled at them expectantly but said nothing.[break][break]

“your best anejo tequila, please. neat.” lulu looked towards her costumed companion, adding, ”and whatever she wants.”[break][break][break]

Ohm. What a queer name for a bar. Its exterior suggested a hip electrical theme, yet its interior was quite serene and zen-like, the scent of burning incense greeting the two women upon their arrival.

When asked what she wanted to drink, a wave of anxiety washed over Andrea. Being tolerant to alcohol was one thing, but having her own personalized beverage was a social song and dance she was sheerly unprepared for.

“I-I’ll have what she’s having!” The dragon-costumed girl blurted out after a moment of debilitating choice paralysis. Hopefully her newest bestie wouldn’t think that she was lame and unimaginative.

”are you sure?” she had not pegged andrea for a tequila drinker, much less straight tequila without so much as a nutpea to accompany it. ”would you like a cigarette too?”[break][break]

meanwhile, a dusty bottle of golden liquor was pulled from the top shelf without need for conformation. it did not have a spout and its old cork squeaked and made a round pop sound when pulled out.[break][break]

moments later, two glasses were sat before them, and lulu was fixed with an expectant old stare until she slid cash across the poplar slab.

“I don’t smoke.” Said Andrea bluntly. Her dream was to transform into a Pokémon. She wanted to get claws, fangs, and a tail, not lung cancer.

Taking a sip of the unfamiliar beverage, the eccentric cosplayer winced ever so slightly. “Wow, that’s a strong taste! I don’t hate it, though!” She took another sip, quickly becoming a tequila enjoyer.

After paying for her own drink, Andrea turned to the other woman with a questioning look. “So, are we friends now?” She had thoroughly convinced herself that they were, but a part of her was still trepidant.

she didn’t light up either. her offer hadn’t been entirely serious, and andrea’s appreciation of the drink was far more surprising. the rare grin it elicited from the scientist was genuine.[break][break]

however, truth dwindled.[break][break]

“i suppose so. look at us, setting aside our differences.” she lifted her tequila with a fox’s smile, lightly tapping the side of it against andrea’s glass before taking a sip.[break][break]

“and since we are friends, i should ask you, how have you been since that terrible time in the prison? not to bring up perhaps painful memories, but it was something we shared.”[break][break][break]

The young PokéManiac did not answer right away, taking another sip of her alcoholic beverage instead. There was a noticeable change in her attitude, as she vacantly stared at her glass.

“I’ve been doing… better.” She eventually replied with a hint of hesitation in her voice. “Some nights, I have trouble sleeping. When I close my eyes, I can still see those three… the dog, the monkey, and the bird… laughing. Just laughing.”

Andrea took deep breaths to calm herself. Once her shaking had died down somewhat, she turned back to Lulu. “What about you? How have you been holding up?” She asked.

with the question turned on her, she was quiet at first, before confiding a little closer, ”it wasn’t my worst stay in prison.” which was mostly a joke, but wedgehurst had been a hell in many ways, and it had dragged on for far longer.[break][break]

she noticed andrea’s fearful shaking, even in the dim violet light. ”if you find that you can’t ignore those nightmares, remember, the last laugh is yours. they're in pieces, are they not?”[break][break][break]

Andrea stared back at the older woman in a mixture of bewilderment and disbelief. “Not your worst?! What could possibly be worse than that?!” She blurted out.

Still, the information that Lulu had apparently been incarcerated before was new. Getting to know each other through chit-chat was part of the feminine bonding ritual, so clearly they were doing this right.

Taking another sip of tequila, the eccentric trainer contemplated Lulu’s words. “Not all of them are in pieces… The never-rot survived, and so did Cyllora.” She pointed out with a frown.

Andrea’s frown deepened when the other woman mentioned the creature from the pit. “She’s not a thing! Her name is Pon!” She curtly replied.

Clearly the Rocket scientist’s unfortunate use of words had gotten under the PokéManiac’s skin. There was still a disconnect between them that could not be mended simply by sharing a few drinks.

“Sorry…” The young cosplayer mumbled, taking another sip. “It’s just that, after what I saw in the RKS Simulation, I can’t forgive anyone who’s prejudiced against her.”

“Yeah, the RKS Simulation. You know how when you insert the Scarlet Book in the machine, it unlocks a scenario with Koraidon?” The mildly inebriated girl explained as if that was common knowledge.

“Well, another of the unlocked scenarios was with Pon.” She explained further, staring at her own distorted reflection within her glass. “In it, she gets ousted by a mob of angry villagers calling her a monster and an ogre. Isn’t that so unfair? What did she ever do to them?”

Just thinking about it made her blood boil and her face flare up with anger. Or maybe that was just because of the tequila.

“What? Of course she isn’t! Pon doesn’t have a vicious bone in her body!” Andrea vehemently replied to the scientist’s query regarding the ogre’s alignment.

Pecharunt and its three retainers could probably attest otherwise, but that was neither here nor there.

“Say, what’s your most favorite Pokémon in the whole wide world?” The young PokéManiac asked out of the blue, wishing to learn more about her new bestie.
